Realise I’ve missed the boat somewhat on this episode but thought I’d throw in my 2c worth…
My take on the song has always been that its about a bloke who enters into a relationship with a lady (or man for that matter).
The dog has been this bloke’s loyal and unwavering companion until this sheila came along. The pup’s love has always been unconditional, and this new woman is setting boundaries, like no dogs on the bed!
To this end I don’t think the lyric ‘There’s the church there is the steeple’ is a throwaway line simply to rhyme with people. I think its an indication of the lady putting a condition on the relationship – if you want to get hitched – Its me or the dog!
Hopefully the bloke in the song (Coxy?) chose the more faithful, loving, loyal & wild yet civilised of the two!
